Station Eleven: A Novel by Emily St. John Mandel

A 2014 National Book Award Finalist, Station Eleven: A Novel on its surface may appear to be another in a string of apocalyptic/dystopian in-fashion novels.  However, as observed by Justine Jordan of The Guardian, “Station Eleven is not so much about apocalypse as about memory and loss, nostalgia and yearning; the effort of art to deepen our fleeting impressions of the world and bolster our solitude… whereas most apocalypse novels push grimly forward into horror or dystopia, Station Eleven skips back and forth between the pre-flu world and Year Twenty after global collapse, when the worst is over and survivors have banded together into isolated settlements.”  Karen Valby of Entertainment Weekly said the novel “miraculously reads like equal parts page-turner and poem” and of author Emily St. John Mandel that “One of her great feats is that the story feels spun rather than plotted, with seamless shifts in time and characters.”

Station Eleven: A Novel by Emily St. John Mandel is available at book stores, your local library, and other book sources.  Book club will meet for lunch and discussion at Panera Bread (1624 E. 15th St., just west of Utica on the south side of 15thSt.) immediately following worship service (about 12:15pm).
